Washington, Aug 16, 2025 — First Lady Melania Trump has written a heartfelt letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to protect the innocence of children amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The letter was delivered by former President Donald Trump during his summit with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15.
According to Fox News, the letter emphasizes peace and the duty of world leaders to safeguard children.
“As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation’s hope. As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few,” Melania wrote.
Putin reportedly read the letter immediately in front of both delegations. The First Lady highlighted that children’s innocence transcends geography, ideology, and government.
She added:
“Some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them. Mr. Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter.”
The letter concluded with a strong appeal:
“Such a bold idea transcends all human division. It is time.”
Ukraine’s Response
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha revealed that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Melania Trump’s initiative. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sybiha called it “a true act of humanism” aimed at reuniting deported Ukrainian children with their families.
Background
In 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for President Putin and Russian Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova, accusing them of war crimes related to the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. Moscow, however, claims the relocations are humanitarian evacuations from conflict zones.
Looking Ahead
While Melania’s letter does not specify a concrete action for Putin, it places moral responsibility on him to safeguard children. Whether this appeal will have any diplomatic impact remains uncertain, but it has sparked global conversations on the humanitarian cost of the war.
