UN Report: Women's Rights Under Threat 30 Years After Beijing

Global Backlash Against Women’s Rights

A recent United Nations report highlights a disturbing trend 30 years after the adoption of the Beijing Declaration on gender equality, stating that women’s and girls' rights are under attack globally. The report, issued by UN Women, reveals that nearly a quarter of governments worldwide reported a rollback in women’s rights over the past year, with deep-rooted gender discrimination still prevalent in many societies.

Progress in Some Areas, but Challenges Remain

Despite advances in areas like girls' education and family planning, the report warns that women remain vulnerable to violence, with one woman or girl killed every 10 minutes by a partner or family member. Furthermore, conflict-related sexual violence against women and girls has surged by 50% since 2022. Only 87 countries have ever been led by a woman, and gender gaps in political and economic power persist.

The Road Ahead: UN’s Call for Gender Equality by 2030

UN Women’s Executive Director, Sima Bahous, emphasized that the agency has adopted a roadmap to advance gender equality by 2030. Key measures include ensuring equal access to technology for all women and girls, investing in social protections like universal healthcare and education, and ending violence against women. The roadmap also calls for more women in decision-making roles and gender-responsive humanitarian aid in conflicts.

Gender Discrimination: Still a Major Barrier

Despite some positive strides, the report reveals that women have only 64% of the legal rights of men globally. Women still face significant barriers to equal representation in government, with men making up three-quarters of lawmakers. Additionally, women aged 15 to 24 continue to lag behind other age groups in accessing modern family planning, and maternal mortality rates remain stagnant since 2015.
