Universal Pictures has acquired the spec script of Dylan Clark and co-writer Joe Russo for a feature-length adaptation of the viral horror short film 'Portrait Of God', which has amassed nearly nine million views on YouTube since its release on 28 August 2022. The project will be produced by genre veterans Jordan Peele and Sam Raimi through their respective production companies, Monkeypaw and Ghost House Pictures.
The original short centers on a religious young academic who, while preparing a presentation on a mysterious artwork titled 'Portrait Of God', experiences a terrifying encounter with the divine in a dark, unsettling way. Clark, who will direct the feature, is expanding the seven-and-a-half-minute short into a full-length horror film with rich thematic exploration.
Both Raimi and Peele have previously explored themes of faith, spirituality, and supernatural horror. Raimi’s work on Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell and Peele’s Nope exemplify their ability to blend suspense, horror, and philosophical undertones, making them ideal collaborators for Clark’s adaptation.
The feature film aims to deepen the original narrative, examining the tension between belief, perception, and the unknown, while pushing horror conventions to deliver a visually and thematically compelling story.
