Severe Thunderstorms and Heat Wave Hit Chicago Area
Chicago, IL – August 16, 2025:
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a Flash Flood Warning across parts of Illinois and Indiana as storms continue to impact the region.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in Effect

Warnings are in place for Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, and Will counties until 7 p.m.

Storms bring quarter-sized hail and winds up to 60 mph.

Flash flooding was reported in Naperville, Downers Grove, and Woodridge earlier in the evening.
Heat Index Reaches 100+ Degrees

Temperatures soared into the 90s across much of Chicago.

Heat indices reached 100–110 degrees, especially south of Interstate 80.

NWS classified the region under an Elevated Excessive Heat Risk.
