Trump Adviser Insults Veterans, Calling Them "Not Fit to Have a Job" – A Disgraceful Remark
Alina Habba, a counsel to former President Donald Trump, recently made a deeply troubling comment about veterans working in federal government jobs. Her remarks, made in the context of the mass firings of federal employees led by Elon Musk, suggested that some veterans might not be “fit to have a job” or “willing to come to work.”
This statement is especially disheartening considering that veterans make up a significant portion of the federal workforce. According to the Office of Personnel Management, approximately 30% of federal employees are veterans, and more than half of them are disabled veterans. These individuals have sacrificed for their country, yet Habba’s words suggest they may not be deserving of their jobs or the dignity they have earned through service.
When asked about the thousands of veterans losing their jobs in the recent federal purge, Habba responded, “We have a fiscal responsibility to use taxpayer dollars to pay people that actually work. That doesn’t mean that we forget our veterans by any means. We are going to care for them in the right way, but perhaps they’re not fit to have a job at this moment, or not willing to come to work.”
The implication that veterans, who have already served their country, are somehow unfit for employment is a gross insult. Veterans deserve respect, not demeaning comments from a high-ranking member of the administration.
Alina Habba's Track Record
Habba's career includes a number of controversial moments. As one of Trump’s attorneys in the defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll, Habba was repeatedly reprimanded by the judge for her errors and disruptive behavior. Her lack of professionalism during that trial led to threats of jail time from the judge. Given her track record, questioning the fitness of others for their jobs seems particularly misplaced.
Trump and Musk Mock Federal Workers
Alongside Habba’s comments, President Trump and Elon Musk have repeatedly mocked federal workers, contributing to a growing atmosphere of disdain for public servants. Recently, Trump posted a meme making light of federal employees losing their jobs, showing a cartoon character engaging in trivial tasks while their livelihoods were being upended. This callous attitude from the top is not only insensitive but also harmful to the millions of federal workers who dedicate their lives to serving the public.
The Need for Accountability and Respect
The Trump administration’s ongoing mistreatment of federal workers and veterans is disgraceful. These public servants should not be treated as expendable or mocked. Instead, they deserve respect, fair treatment, and the acknowledgment of their contributions. Veterans, in particular, should never be subjected to the kind of dehumanizing comments that Habba made.
It is clear that veterans who serve in the federal workforce deserve an apology from the Trump administration. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that such an apology will be forthcoming. Republican lawmakers, who have shown little courage in standing up for their constituents, are unlikely to address this harmful rhetoric.
The administration must recognize that the people who serve in government roles—especially veterans—are not “lazy” or “unfit.” They are committed individuals who have chosen to continue serving their country in a different capacity. They deserve better than the dismissive, hurtful remarks they have been subjected to. It’s time for an apology, but more importantly, it’s time for the administration to take responsibility for its actions and show some respect to those who have given so much.
