Republican Congresswoman Criticizes Trump's Immigration Policy
Salazar Urges Trump to Protect Venezuelan Immigrants
Republican Representative María Elvira Salazar is urging Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to revoke deportation protections for Venezuelan immigrants. Speaking to CNN, she emphasized the need to distinguish between criminal gangs like Tren de Aragua and law-abiding Venezuelans who entered the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
“These are not illegals. This is not Tren de Aragua or MS-13. These are good people who came, and we welcome them,” Salazar stated, highlighting the plight of 600,000 Venezuelans who could lose their legal status later this year.
Trump Administration Faces Legal Challenges
Despite the U.S. government’s stance against Venezuela’s socialist leadership, Trump’s administration recently announced the revocation of TPS for Venezuelans. However, immigration advocacy groups have challenged the decision, filing lawsuits in California and Maryland.
Meanwhile, Trump has also canceled a Biden-era oil production deal with Venezuela, citing the country’s reluctance to accept deportees. This move further complicates the situation for Venezuelans in the U.S.
Salazar’s Pleas May Go Unanswered
Salazar's appeal for Trump's intervention may fall on deaf ears. Historically, Trump has prioritized tough immigration policies over humanitarian considerations, leaving Venezuelan immigrants in an uncertain position.
