Malaysia: PM Anwar Ibrahim Reaffirms No Direct Negotiations for Government Contracts

Commitment to Transparency in Government Procurement

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that his administration has not allowed direct negotiations for government contracts since coming into power over two years ago.

Speaking at the National Waqf Month launch at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, emphasized that all procurement must go through a transparent tender process verified by the Ministry of Finance.

Crackdown on Corruption and Financial Mismanagement

Anwar addressed criticisms regarding government donations and public funds, saying,

“If they ask, ‘Why are you asking us to donate, but you as the prime minister, you allow people to plunder the nation’s wealth?’ My answer is, I will not allow it.”

He assured Malaysians that he is committed to cleaning up past financial mismanagement and corruption, adding,

“Some may say, ‘Oh, what about before?’ That was before. In my two years as prime minister, I have not allowed it.”

Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Scandal as a Warning

The Prime Minister referenced the controversial Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) project, describing it as an example of corruption and mismanagement that has severely impacted the country.

“Do not buy ships that are left stranded for decades, causing billions to disappear while we remain silent. This involves national defense, and purchases must be transparent and at reasonable prices,” he said.

Zero Tolerance for Corruption

Anwar issued a strong warning against any attempts to bypass transparent procurement rules, regardless of rank or position.

“To those who are uncomfortable with this, no matter how high your rank, listen carefully—I will not allow it, because it would betray and destroy our country’s defense system,” he warned.

Policy Against Direct Negotiations Since 2022

Since assuming office in November 2022, Anwar has banned direct negotiations for government procurement, ensuring that all projects follow proper tender processes to prevent financial leakages and corruption.

This stance aligns with his broader mission to reform Malaysia’s governance system and restore public trust in government spending.
