Arson Attack at Berlin Construction Site
German police are investigating a suspected arson attack at a construction site in Berlin, with reports indicating that activists have claimed responsibility. The attack, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, targeted construction cranes and signal cables belonging to Deutsche Bahn.
Possible Motive Behind the Attack
Authorities suspect the arson was politically motivated. A far-left group reportedly posted an anonymous letter online, claiming responsibility for the attack. According to German media, the group targeted Strabag, a construction company involved in expanding Tesla's factory in Grünheide, Brandenburg, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Berlin.
The activists allege that Tesla's expansion plan includes building a freight yard, operated by Deutsche Bahn, which would result in large-scale deforestation.
Tesla’s Expansion Plans and Public Opposition
Tesla opened its Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg in March 2022, the company's only production plant in Europe. In late 2023, the automaker announced plans to double production capacity to one million cars per year, employing around 12,000 workers.
However, local opposition forced Tesla to scale back its expansion plans. Environmental activists and residents have consistently protested the project, citing concerns over deforestation and environmental impact. In March 2024, another suspected arson attack on power lines—claimed by a far-left group—temporarily halted production at the plant.
Growing Tensions Over Musk’s Political Influence in Germany
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also been a controversial figure in Germany’s political landscape. His public support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the recent federal elections has sparked backlash, particularly from left-wing activists.
In addition to the arson attack, protesters have set up treehouses in nearby forests as a form of resistance, while environmental groups continue to demonstrate against Tesla’s expansion efforts.

Authorities are treating the attack as a serious criminal act and are continuing their investigation. The arson has raised concerns about escalating tensions between environmental activists, far-left groups, and corporate interests in Germany.
